The Metaphoric Toolbox (10 min.)

The Metaphoric Toolbox is a staff routine from Second Step® SEL for Adults. It’s a fun, safe way for members of a group to learn about and acknowledge each other’s unique strengths and skills.

Why Do It?

Great schools exist because of the talented people who work there. As educators, it’s important to take time to reflect on everyone’s individual and collective strengths and how they benefit our school community.

Instructions for a Staff or Small-Group Meeting

1. Watch the Metaphoric Toolbox Video (3 min.)

2. Select a Tool (1 min.)

Which tool represents a skill or strength you have? Select a tool from the image below or think of one that’s not pictured but represents one of your strengths.

  • What tool did you pick and how does it represent a skill or strength you have?
  • How does this skill or strength affect your work with students, colleagues, or families?

4. Reflect as a Group (3 min.)

  • How did it feel to share your skills or strengths with someone else?
  • How did it feel to learn about someone else’s skills or strengths?
  • What’s something new that you learned?
